Installation and Operating Principle of the Asphalt Extensometer

The asphalt extensibility tester is suitable for determining the theoretical relative density of asphalt mixtures using the vacuum method. It is used in asphalt mixture mix design, pavement condition surveys, and quality management during pavement construction to calculate void ratio, compaction degree, and other relevant parameters. However, it is not applicable to asphalt mixtures containing porous aggregates with a water absorption rate exceeding 3%. The tester consists of a frame, an imported vacuum pump, a vibrator, an air valve, a vacuum gauge, a vacuum container, and control electrical components. It features a rational design and convenient operation, and can simultaneously perform parallel tests on two specimens.
Installation of the Asphalt Extensometer:
1. Installation: After unpacking the test mill, thoroughly wipe clean the exterior of the entire machine. Carefully inspect whether components such as the gear-reduction motor, grinding drum, housing, and bearing housings have been damaged during transportation, and check whether any fasteners are loose. If any fasteners are loose, tighten them securely. Then, lift and install the machine using ropes tied to the base frame—never tie the ropes to the housing, shaft, or motor—to avoid damaging the parts. During installation, first remove any dirt or oil from the baseplate of the support structure. The surface of the cement foundation should be smooth and free of debris. The support structure must be placed stably; steel shims may be used to level it if necessary. As for the control box, you may choose its location freely, provided it is placed near the power source and in a location that is convenient for operation.
2. Trial start-up:
(1) Before starting the asphalt ductility tester, first check the grinding drum and the housing. If there is any collision between them, adjust the components to ensure they do not rub against each other. Also, verify that the grinding chamber door is securely closed and free of any looseness.
(2) Inspect the gearbox; if it’s lacking lubricating oil, add about 1 kilogram of oil.
(3) Manually rotate the mill drum for more than one full revolution, checking for smooth operation and any abnormal conditions. Also, verify that the power supply and control box are properly connected and wired. The mill’s rotation and stopping are controlled by the control box, which uses a time relay to automatically stop the mill at a preset time. The mill must operate in a clockwise direction in sequence. If, after starting up, you find that the rotation direction is incorrect, disconnect the power supply, swap the positions of any two wires, and then restart the mill. After confirming that the mill runs normally under no-load conditions, you may gradually introduce a proper load.
Operating principle of the asphalt ductility tester:
1. Connect the power supply, and pay attention: The wiring must be secure, and the entire machine’s casing should have proper grounding protection.
2. Check whether all switches are set to the “off” or “stop” position; if not, adjust them accordingly.
3. Turn on the main power switch; the main power indicator light will illuminate.
4. Heating: Set the switch to the ON position and adjust the temperature controller’s display to the desired temperature—this will initiate heating. Note: Do not turn on the heating or cooling functions when the tank is empty of water.
5. Cooling: Set the switch to the ON position, adjust the temperature controller’s display to the desired temperature, and the machine will start operating, providing automatic control.
6. Stir the water: To ensure a uniform water temperature in the sink, set the switch to the ON position, and the motor will start operating.
7. Stretching: Place the switch in the extended position, and the motor will be powered on. Adjust the speed regulator control button to change the stretching speed.
