Introduction to Pavement Maintenance for Cast-in-Place Asphalt Mixtures
Preventive maintenance refers to maintenance operations aimed at protecting pavement surfaces, preventing the further spread of distresses, slowing down the deterioration rate of pavement performance, and ultimately extending the service life of pavements. Preventive maintenance does not have the function of reinforcing pavement structures; therefore, it should not be expected to improve the strength or load-bearing capacity of pavements.
Restorative maintenance refers to maintenance operations aimed at repairing localized damage or specific types of pavement distress that have not yet affected the entire pavement surface.
Pavement rehabilitation refers to a situation where damage to the pavement has affected most of its surface area, causing comprehensive structural deterioration. As a result, it becomes necessary to carry out repair work involving the regeneration and repaving of the surface layer to some extent.
Pavement reconstruction refers to a situation in which the damage to the pavement has progressed to the point where structural damage has occurred throughout all pavement layers due to the failure to carry out timely repairs and reinforcements. In such cases, not only the pavement surface layer but also the subgrade itself may require reconstruction. When the subgrade needs to be reconstructed as well, the project is referred to as road reconstruction.
