Compaction of pourable asphalt mixtures

2019-01-23

Immediately after the poured asphalt mixture has been spread and leveled, the pavement should be inspected. Any irregularities should be promptly adjusted manually, followed by thorough and uniform compaction.

Compaction work shall be carried out in accordance with the combination of compaction equipment and procedures determined during the trial section.

Compaction is carried out in three stages: initial compaction, intermediate compaction, and final compaction.

Initial compaction: To be carried out immediately after paving, using a static double-wheeled roller. The initial compaction temperature should be controlled within the range of 130℃ to 140℃. The initial compaction should be performed with a light steel-cylinder roller or a vibratory roller set to non-vibration mode. During compaction, the drive wheels should face the paver, and the rolling path and direction should not be changed abruptly, thus avoiding displacement of the mixture.

Re-compaction: Re-compaction follows immediately after the initial compaction. It is carried out using both vibratory rollers and pneumatic tire rollers. Typically, the process begins with 3–4 passes using a vibratory roller, followed by 4–6 passes using a pneumatic tire roller, to achieve the desired degree of compaction.

Final compaction: The final compaction is carried out immediately after the re-compaction. During final compaction, a double-wheeled steel-cylinder roller—specifically, a vibratory roller with vibration turned off—is used to eliminate wheel tracks.
