What is the relationship between penetration and softening point?

2015-07-28

Penetration: The depth to which a standard cone (typically loaded with 150 grams, though 100 grams is also specified) sinks into a grease sample kept at 25°C within 5 seconds.

Softening Point: A steel ball of a specified mass is placed on a metal ring filled with the test sample. Under prescribed heating conditions, the steel ball is allowed to fall from a certain height into the sample. The temperature at which the steel ball first touches the bottom metal baffle is taken as the softening point, expressed in degrees Celsius (℃). This refers to the temperature at which asphalt reaches a specific viscosity under particular experimental conditions.
