What is a compaction tester?

Soil compaction refers to the process of using manual or mechanical methods—such as tamping, grinding, and vibration—to apply pressure energy to the soil, thereby rearranging and compacting soil particles. External compaction forces act on the soil, enabling it to quickly develop new structural strength, including enhancing friction and interlocking among coarse-grained soils and increasing molecular attraction between fine-grained soils, thus improving overall soil properties. A compaction tester is a piece of construction equipment that comes in two main types: heavy-duty manual compaction testers and CNC-controlled multi-functional electric compaction testers. These devices are primarily used to determine the moisture content and unit weight of compacted soil, serving as a basis for controlling soil moisture and specifying density during subgrade construction and earthworks. Compaction machines can be classified according to their application into geotechnical compaction machines and Marshall compaction machines. The geotechnical compaction tester is an instrument used to determine the dry density and moisture content of cohesive soils under specified compaction conditions by employing standard compaction procedures. The Marshall compaction tester is essential laboratory equipment for preparing cylindrical specimens of asphalt mixtures. It is suitable for forming cylindrical specimens used in the Marshall test and indirect tensile tests for asphalt mixtures. Based on the particle size of the soil and the dimensions of the asphalt mixture specimens, compaction testers can be categorized into light-duty geotechnical compaction testers, heavy-duty geotechnical compaction testers, standard Marshall compaction testers, and large-capacity Marshall compaction testers. According to the lifting power of the hammer head, compaction testers can also be divided into manual compaction testers and electric compaction testers.

The compaction apparatus shall have a clearly visible nameplate in a prominent location. The nameplate shall include: the name of the device, specifications/model number, factory serial number, and manufacturer’s name. Electric compaction apparatuses shall be equipped with conspicuous safety warning signs and rotation-direction indicators. Components of the compaction apparatus, such as the hammer head, oil-guiding cylinder (rod), and test cylinder, shall be free from defects—including bending, deformation, surface damage, and severe wear—that could affect the accuracy of test results. Electric compaction apparatuses must have excellent insulation performance, with an insulation resistance of ≥1 MΩ. The counter on the controller of electric compaction apparatuses shall display clear and accurate readings, with no missing counts or skipped-count defects. During operation, the electric compactor shall produce no abnormal noises, and its transmission system shall function smoothly and reliably. Sufficient testing space shall be provided around the compactor. The standard compaction apparatus is an indoor geotechnical testing tool used exclusively for soil compaction tests. It consists of a fixed-weight hammer, a guide rod, and a compaction cylinder. During the test, a soil sample containing a specified amount of water is layered into the compaction cylinder. Each layer of soil is compacted according to prescribed drop weight, drop distance, and number of hammer blows—thus achieving a defined compaction effect. The dry unit weight and moisture content of the solid sample are then measured. By varying the moisture content and repeating the above procedure, the relationship between compaction effect (expressed as dry unit weight) and moisture content under a given compaction condition can be determined. The compaction function of the standard compaction apparatus can also be adjusted according to specific testing requirements. The compaction function of the standard compaction apparatus is essentially consistent with that of conventional compaction apparatuses.
