Technical Parameters and Specifications of the Asphalt Penetration Tester

The asphalt penetration tester is designed and manufactured in accordance with the technical requirements specified in the Ministry of Transport’s industry standard JTGE20-2011. This method is applicable to determining the penetration of road petroleum asphalt, polymer-modified asphalt, as well as the penetration of residue remaining after distillation or emulsification of liquid petroleum asphalt, measured in 0.1 mm increments. The standard test conditions are 25℃, with a load of 100 g and a penetration time of 5 seconds.
The Penetration Index (PI) is used to characterize the temperature sensitivity of asphalt. It should be determined by measuring the penetration at three or more temperature conditions—such as 15°C, 25°C, and 30°C—and then calculated according to the prescribed method. If the penetration value at 30°C is excessively high, 5°C may be substituted instead. The Equivalent Softening Point T800 is the temperature corresponding to an asphalt penetration of 800, and it is used to evaluate the high-temperature stability of asphalt. The Equivalent Brittle Point T1.2 is the temperature corresponding to an asphalt penetration of 1.2, and it is used to assess the low-temperature crack resistance of asphalt.
