Working Principle and Preparatory Steps for Using the Asphalt Extensometer

The asphalt ductility tester is suitable for determining the ductility of various types of asphalt, residue remaining after distilling liquid asphalt, and evaporative residue from asphalt emulsions. Next, our editor will introduce you to the working principle and preparatory steps for using the asphalt ductility tester—let’s take a look together!
  Working principle:
  1. The mechanical tensile device is driven by a low-speed motor and moves from one end to the other via a transmission gear rack connected through a gearbox. The transmission system is also equipped with a variable-speed mechanism, allowing for two different tensile speeds: 50 mm/min and 10 mm/min.
  2. The temperature control unit consists of a refrigeration system (including a compressor, condenser, fan, etc.) as well as a heater, water pump, and water tank. By means of water circulation driven by the pump, the water temperature in the tank can be maintained at a constant and adjustable level between 5°C and 50°C.
  3. The extensometer LCD display can directly show the elongation of three specimens and automatically calculate and display the average elongation of the three samples.
  Preparation for use:
  (1) Thoroughly mix the release agent and apply it evenly to the clean, dry base plate of the test mold as well as to the inner surfaces of the two side molds. Then, assemble the test mold into an “8” shape and place it on the base plate.
  (2) Insert the prepared sample into the mold several times, moving it back and forth from one end of the mold to the other, ensuring that the sample level slightly exceeds the surface of the mold. During this process, take care to avoid trapping air bubbles.
  (3) After the specimen has cooled at room temperature for 30 minutes, place it in a water bath maintained at the specified test temperature for another 30 minutes. Then, remove the specimen from the water bath and use a hot scraper to smooth out any excess material above the mold, ensuring that the asphalt surface is flush with the mold surface. Next, immerse the mold—complete with its base plate—back into the water bath maintained at the specified test temperature for 1 to 2 hours.
