High-temperature performance of cast-in-place asphalt mixtures

2012-08-15

The cast-in-place asphalt mixture is paved using a casting method that eliminates the need for compaction. Once cooled, it instantly sets into shape with virtually no voids. This type of cast-in-place asphalt mixture boasts excellent impermeability, high deformation resistance, superior freeze-thaw durability, oil resistance, aging resistance, and overall structural integrity. It also exhibits outstanding performance in resisting low-temperature cracking and fatigue cracking. Previously, the high-temperature stability of cast-in-place mixtures was evaluated using tests such as the Marshall test and high-temperature rutting tests. In this paper, we conduct a study—using the penetration test, which is currently the most widely applied method—from several perspectives, including aggregate gradation, binder type, binder content, and mineral powder content. The asphalt binder used in this cast-in-place asphalt mixture is specially developed for cast-in-place asphalt concrete. The cast-in-place asphalt mixture is clean and dry; its texture is hard and dense, with high strength; its particles are uniformly distributed and exhibit good gradation; and its shape is relatively regular polyhedral, with very little flaky or needle-like particle content.
