There are various types of cast-in-place asphalt mixtures, which can be broadly categorized into petroleum asphalt, coal tar asphalt, and natural asphalt—each with its own distinct characteristics.
Petroleum asphalt: Petroleum asphalt is the residue left after crude oil is distilled. Depending on the degree of refining, it can exist as a liquid, semi-solid, or solid at room temperature. Petroleum asphalt is dark in color and glossy, with high temperature sensitivity. These substances are more or less harmful to human health.
Coke Pitch: Coke pitch is a byproduct of coke production—the black substance left behind in the distillation kettle after tar has been distilled. It differs from refined tar only in its physical properties, with no clear boundary between the two. Due to variations in the content of these components, the properties of coke pitch also differ accordingly. Temperature changes significantly affect coke pitch: it tends to become brittle and crack easily in winter, while in summer it easily softens. When heated, it emits a distinctive odor.
Natural asphalt: Natural asphalt is stored underground, sometimes forming mineral deposits or accumulating on the Earth's surface. Most of this type of asphalt has undergone natural evaporation and oxidation and generally no longer contains any toxins.
