Before the test, first turn on the power and inspect the compaction apparatus to ensure that it is in proper working condition and ready for use. Select either a Φ100 or Φ152 compaction cylinder and collar according to the soil sample, and replace the corresponding compaction base (during this process, if the hammer is positioned above the support plate, unscrew the support plate to prevent the hammer from falling. Then, reattach the support plate). Install the compaction cylinder and collar, and carefully place the prepared soil samples into the test cylinder in layers according to specified thicknesses. Level each layer’s surface, then lower the tracking plate onto the sample awaiting compaction. Set the counter to its default “non-secured” mode. The counter will operate automatically, resetting itself to zero after each cycle without requiring any preset adjustments. Press the “Jog” (yellow) button to temporarily activate the instrument’s drive mechanism, causing the compaction hammer to rise. You can use the “Jog” switch to observe the rotation direction and add more soil into the test cylinder. Press the “Start” (green) key to begin the compaction process; once the desired number of blows is reached, the machine will stop automatically. If any abnormalities are detected during compaction, you can press the “Stop” button to interrupt the process immediately.
After the first layer of compaction is completed, lift the tracking plate to “pull” out the sample layer. Then add a second batch of soil samples, and repeat the same compaction procedure for all subsequent layers. Once compaction is finished, restore the instrument to its original position and turn off the power. Clean the test cylinder, casing, base, tracking plate, and hammer of the compaction apparatus, and regularly lubricate the moving parts to keep the instrument clean at all times.
After using the compaction apparatus, it should be cleaned promptly to maintain both the instrument’s cleanliness and the cleanliness of its surrounding environment. The chain and gears should be cleaned and maintained once a week. The lifting mechanism, guide rails, and rotating parts should be lubricated with a small amount of No. 20 machine oil before each shift. When the compaction apparatus is not in use, it should be covered with a protective cover. First, check the three power cords, then inspect the instrument’s power switch and all components of the counter. Tighten all screws on the test tube. Turn on the power, press the jog button, and observe the direction of the frame’s movement. The frame should move in the forward direction; reversing the rotation is strictly prohibited. Next, verify that the compaction hammer is positioned at the bottom of the test tube. If the compaction hammer is not at the bottom, press the button to allow the hammer to drop into place. Otherwise, once the hammer has been lifted, it will not be able to fall back down.
