Introduction to the Advantages of Mobile Laboratories

2021-11-03

  1. Small Footprint: The mobile container-based PCR laboratory, constructed from a standard shipping container, features experimental workflows and equipment that are designed according to standard laboratory specifications. It is also equipped with a decontamination room in accordance with the requirements outlined in T/CECS662G-2020, the "Technical Standard for Construction of Biosafety Level 2 Laboratories for Medical Use." The total footprint is approximately 52.5 square meters, making it suitable for deployment in virtually any medical facility or outbreak area. In emergency situations, it can be used as a vehicle-mounted laboratory; once transported to the outbreak site, no installation is required before it can be put into operation immediately.
  2. High degree of independence: Since all installations within each container have already been completed before it leaves the factory—systems such as water supply, electrical power, ventilation, wastewater disposal, and exhaust gas emission—are already integrated into the container—and this also ensures the safety of the external environment. Under certain conditions, the container can even operate independently without external power or water supply, enabling rapid assembly. The docking and installation process itself does not require highly specialized personnel; regular disease control maintenance staff or engineering technicians can easily carry out the docking procedure.
  3. Easy to Manage: The recommended placement for the container is typically in a secluded outdoor location, allowing it to be set up as a separate zone for convenient management. This arrangement is advantageous for isolating patients and controlling the spread of infection. Outdoor air circulates more rapidly, preventing the kind of high-concentration buildup and prolonged retention seen indoors—conditions that can increase the risk of aerosol transmission. The modular laboratory design effectively mitigates both cluster formation and infectious transmission.
  4. Sustainable Use: The mobile laboratory can be reused. After the pandemic ends, it can be disinfected by trained professionals and then transported again to CDCs, medical facilities, ports, or third-party testing organizations for further use. Alternatively, after proper storage and maintenance, it can be put back into service whenever needed, thereby promoting cost savings and resource reuse.
  5. The safety level is even higher. Mobile laboratories must take into account factors such as long-distance transportation and outdoor storage conditions. The laboratory benches and equipment housed within the container have significantly higher requirements for shock resistance, corrosion resistance, and cold- and heat-resistant performance compared to those in conventional laboratories.
