Features of the Rotary Compaction Tester

The rotary compactor is regarded as one of the better laboratory methods for compacting asphalt mixture specimens, used to evaluate the compaction characteristics and field performance of test specimens. Compaction is achieved by applying vertical stress via end plates; the mold’s longitudinal axis rotates at a fixed angle relative to the vertical direction, while the upper and lower end plates remain parallel. During compaction, the specimen height is automatically measured, and the test density and air void content are calculated. The operator can choose to compact the specimen to a specified number of rotations or to a target density or air void content.
The primary challenge with rotary compaction machines is how to improve both the quality of fabrication and ease of use. The compaction mold, when filled with the mixture, is heavy and often extremely hot. In most cases, these molds need to be manually loaded into and removed from the compactor. Instead of requiring manual handling of the filled molds, the machine automatically lowers them into the compaction position, then lifts them to transfer them to an integrated demolding system—making operation remarkably convenient.
